On Tuesday, news broke that PGA Tour superstar Rory McIlroy had filed for divorce from his wife Ericka, ending their marriage after about seven seasons. It was a surprising move that seemingly came out of nowhere, but he did not want to talk about it in the media.
Ahead of his press conference Wednesday before the 2024 PGA Championship, a moderator made it very clear that Rory McIlroy was not interested in answering any questions about his divorce.
“I believe you all saw the statement yesterday from Rory’s communication team specifically that he will not be making any additional comments on his private life, so thank you all for respecting his wishes,” the moderator said at the start of the media session, according to the New York Post.
One reporter did ask a fairly vague question regarding McIlroy’s divorce, asking the PGA Tour star how he was doing personally. But McIlroy did not offer much of a response.
“I am ready to play this week,” McIlroy said in response to the question.
Additionally, the moderator told reporters that the press conference would be kept to just 10 minutes, which is only about half as long as most press conferences.
