In recent weeks there have been talks about the Kansas City Chiefs potentially relocating to a new city after a recent state vote to use a new sales tax to fund their stadium renovations did not pass. But according to Kansas City mayor Quinton Lucas, the team “isn’t going anywhere” if he has anything to say about the matter.
Dallas mayor Eric Johnson has recently made a play to bring the Chiefs to Dallas, which of course is already the home of the Dallas Cowboys.
“Welcome home, Dallas Texans!” Johnson said in a post on Twitter/X earlier this month.
Lucas has since responded to Johnson’s social media post, urging Kansas City residents to not listen to the noise about a potential relocation in his own post
“I hear rumors, including even from the Mayor of Dallas,” Lucas wrote on Twitter/X. “Kansas City, don’t believe the noise. We are committed to retention of our teams with vastly lower expenses–think needed infrastructure build out–than even an intra-metro move. Both teams will be in KCMO in 2040 and long after.”
It’s reassuring that Lucas and the city of Kansas City appears to be committed to accommodating the Chiefs. But still, there are some pretty significant hurdles that need to be situated in order for the team to stay in the city for the long haul.
The Chiefs lease at Arrowhead Stadium is set to expire after the 2030 season. Between now and then, the city and the Chiefs will need to figure out a way to figure out some of the renovations that the Chiefs want to implement at the stadium.
The Chiefs organization has already threatened to leave the city. So the team could still certainly look for a new home if the relationship with Lucas and the city doesn’t improve soon.
