On Friday, news broke that Caleb Williams raised some eyebrows around the country when news broke that he was declining to participate in any kind of medical testing at the NFL Draft. It was widely seen as a pretty controversial move, but he explained it a little bit more during his press conference.
Though Caleb Williams will not do medical testing at the NFL Combine for all 32 teams, he will do testing for the teams that he visits who could potentially draft him.
“For the medical stuff, I’ll be doing the medical stuff — just not here in Indy. I’ll be doing it at the team interviews,” Williams said according to Pro Football Talk. “You know, not 32 teams can draft me. There’s only one of me. And so, the teams that I go to for my visits, those teams will have the medical [information], and that’ll be it.”
Williams is widely expected to be the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming draft, which is currently held by the Chicago Bears. But he will be visiting a lot of teams throughout the pre-draft process, given the possibility of a team trading up to select him.
“I plan on visiting a good amount of teams,” Williams said. “I don’t exactly know what the plan is with that, just because I’ve met with teams that I didn’t know I was going to meet with when I got here.”
So maybe the decision not to undergo medical testing was not as big of a red flag as originally thought.
