In October 2022, former WTA No. 1 Simona Halep tested positive at the US Open for roxadustat, which is a banned substance. As a result, the tennis superstar was given a four-year ban, making her ineligible to play competitive tennis until October 2026. But Halep has maintained her innocence, and this month, she got to defend herself in front of the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
In a post on Instagram, Simona Halep referred to the doping allegations as a “nightmare” and expressed gratitude that she finally had a chance to formally defend herself.
“The nightmare that I have lived for a year and half has finished. I had the chance to present my defense in front of TAS, to show that I never did any kind of doping. This is what I have said from the first day that I was accused,” Halep wrote in an Instagram post on Wednesday.
Now, all Halep can do is wait on the decision, but it sounds like she’s feeling pretty confident.
“Now I am waiting for the decision with my head held high and I wanted to thank you, my fans, players, former players, legends of this sport, my sponsors and everyone else for your amazing support, all the messages and videos that you did for me during this harrowing time that I had,” Halep said.
We’ll have to see how this plays out for her.
