Typically, when a high-profile player is preparing to begin their NFL career, they hire an agent to help them with the whole process, including contract negotiations with teams. But it does not sound like former Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams will be using an agent as he prepares for the NFL Draft.
According to NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Caleb Williams has decided not to hire an agent as he enters the league as he plans to represent himself.
“The list of draft-eligible players and their agents, published by the NFL Players Association on Wednesday, does not include the former USC quarterback. After sending a couple of texts, we’ve confirmed that Williams has not hired an agent — and he apparently does not plan to do so,” Florio wrote for Pro Football Talk.
While the vast majority of players throughout the league do elect to hire agents, some players do not. And as Florio points out, the decision has led to mixed results.
“Multiple players have opted in recent years to represent themselves. Some have managed to do very good deals on their own (like Bobby Wagner). Others have not. Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, whose long-term deal was delayed by the fact that he was handling his own contract, ultimately got a great deal from the Ravens. (He arguably could have done even better if he had a skilled agent pestering other teams to try to sign him to an offer sheet last year.)” Florio wrote for Pro Football Talk.
It’s a pretty shocking move for such a young player to try to represent himself as he first steps into the league. We’ll have to see how it works out for him.
