The Ohio State Buckeyes aren’t exactly sure how they will use superstar defender Sonny Styles next season, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
With the size of a linebacker and the speed of a safety, Sonny Styles is a player that the Buckeyes can use all over the field. New linebackers coach James Laurinaitis compared him to former Clemson Tigers star Isaiah Simmons, saying that he doesn’t necessarily have a strict position but he is “just a weapon.”
“I think that there’s a lot of different roles that we can put Sonny in to bring out the best in him,” Laurinaitis said according to Eleven Warriors. “I think with his body, size, his age, when you try to project him forward, he’s kind of in that Isaiah Simmons mix where you’re like, ‘What really is he? Is he a safety?’ He’s just a weapon. So I think that’s something that we have to evaluate this spring, where to put him to not only best suit what we want to do as Silver Bullets but also what’s best for his future.”
Styles has been considered a safety throughout his career at Ohio State up to this point, but it seems like the team might be open to putting him in the box more as a linebacker this upcoming season.
We’ll have to see how the team chooses to use him, but it’s clear that they love his talent.
