Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce made it pretty clear after the Super Bowl LVIII win over the San Francisco 49ers that he was not planning to retire and intends to return to the team next season to pursue an unprecedented third consecutive Super Bowl championship. But despite this decision, it sounds like he is indeed nearing retirement.
During a recent press conference, Travis Kelce acknowledged that while he does still very much enjoy competing and trying to be as great as he possibly can, he is “closer to not playing” than he is to the beginning of his career.
“I do love the legacy of wanting to be as great as I possibly can be,” Kelce said according to ESPN. “But at this point in my career, I just enjoy coming into this building. I’m closer to not playing than I am [the other side]. I just cherish every single moment with these guys.”
This doesn’t necessarily mean that this upcoming season will be the final season for Kelce, but with the rumors speculating that he was considering retirement even this year, there is certainly always a chance that he decides to call it a career after next season.
