Over the past few years, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has established himself as arguably the best receiving tight end of all time, and he’s long been the favorite target for star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, especially on key downs and in the red zone. But Kelce is also fine with not being the one to get the ball, as long as the Chiefs are successful. In fact, it sounds like he might even prefer that.
On the game-winning play against the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl this weekend, Travis Kelce was not the one who caught the ball, nor was he the intended target on the play. Instead, Kelce was a decoy on the play, knowing he would attract attention as the favorite red-zone target of quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Obviously, the play worked.
With the attention Kelce drew in the middle of the field, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman Jr. was able to leak out wide open to the corner where he caught the touchdown pass to win the Super Bowl.
And Kelce wouldn’t have had it any other way.
“It’s an electric feeling, knowing all eyes are on me and someone else is open,” Kelce said.
It’s clear that Kelce didn’t care about getting the ball or the glory himself, he just wanted his team to be successful.
