With defensive coordinator Dan Quinn leaving the team to become the next head coach of the Washington Commanders, the Dallas Cowboys have a potential problem on their hands as they try to find a defensive coordinator despite the uncertain future of head coach Mike McCarthy. But team owner Jerry Jones doesn’t seem to think that will be a big issue.
Mike McCarthy is in the last year of his contract this season after many thought there was a chance he was fired following another postseason disappointment this season. It’s widely understood that he will be coaching for his job in 2024, which could make it difficult to convince a defensive coordinator to join the staff, knowing that a staff shakeup could be coming after just one season. But Jerry Jones is downplaying that concern.
“I don’t anticipate that being an issue at all,” Jones said according to the Dallas Cowboys team website. “If they take the job, they will be coordinator of the Cowboys. They would be looking at that right there and all that goes with that. If they’re aspiring, they know there’s a chance to be a head coach someplace, because the one that just left is.”
We’ll have to see who the team ends up with as their next defensive coordinator.
