The Kansas City Chiefs clinched a victory over the Baltimore Ravens and a trip to the Super Bowl during Sunday night’s AFC Championship game with a crucial third-down deep ball from quarterback Patrick Mahomes to Chiefs wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling. And it sounds like Mahomes decided to just let his receiver go and make a play.

During his postgame press conference, Patrick Mahomes explained what was going through his head on the crucial play, saying that he saw Valdes-Scantling open deep and he decided to just “put it up” and let his receiver try to make a play on the ball.

“I looked at Rashee [Rice] first, and the safety cut him and it gave MVS the free lane,” Mahomes said according to KSHB. “I put it up and let him make a play. In those situations, you put it up. You don’t want to overthrow it, so you just put it up there, one-on-one and try to make a play. That’s what he did.”

Obviously, it worked. Valdes-Scantling pulled down the pass for a 32-yard gain, giving the Chiefs a first down that allowed them to run a few quarterback kneels from victory formation and escape with the victory.
