During the Kansas City Chiefs win over the Maimi Dolphins in the Wild Card round of the playoffs, Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes faced a pretty concerning situation when a chunk of his helmet broke off after a hit to the head. As a result, the NFL is looking into the incident.

Earlier this week, NFL Executive V.P. Jeff Miller revealed that the NFL is in possession of the broken helmet and is investigating what happened to cause the helmet to break.

“Obviously the conditions were extreme and may have contributed to the potential failure in that case,” Miller said according to Pro Football Talk. “We want to know how the helmets perform not just in optimal situations but in extreme situations.”

Even though this situation was cause for concern, Miller pointed out that the league does largely have a lot of confidence in the helmets and their ability to protect players on the field.

“It happens so seldom, and we’re grateful for that,” Miller said. “The work the manufacturers have done to create better and better helmets with each succeeding helmet is impressive.”

We’ll have to see what the NFL concludes as a result of its investigation.
