Former Ohio State Buckeyes safety Tyvis Powell certainly made his mark on the program, pulling down a game-winning interception over the Alabama Crimson Tide in the 2014 Sugar Bowl before earning defensive MVP honors in the College Football Playoff title game against the Oregon Ducks. He’s earned his right to be a little critical of the program, and he did not hold back this week.
During a recent appearance on The Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show, Tyvis Powell had some brutal words about the current state of the Ohio State football program under head coach Ryan Day, declaring that he’s willing to give Day “one more season” but that he should certainly be on the hot seat due to the way he has managed his coaching staff.
“His seat is on fire. The seat is on fire,” Powell said. “I will give you one more season, this is it. One more season. There has to be some changes made on your coaching staff, my brother, because for many years you have went out there and promoted guys that don’t deserve it. You’ve got coaches in there that really can’t coach, that’s really just collecting a paycheck.”

“You have to cut that baggage and get guys in there that have got football minds that are going to dedicate themselves to getting this program back to where it’s at,” Powell continued. “Let the buddy-buddy stuff go.”
Powell specifically outlined the offensive line and the defensive line as areas where the Buckeyes needed to improve their coaching staff.
“We’ve got to get some more production out of the offensive line – that looks atrocious,” Powell said. “We’ve got to get more production from the defensive line – we can’t get five-star recruits and only get five sacks in a season, that’s ridiculous.”
It’s clear that some alums are getting restless with the way Day has performed at Ohio State in recent years. We’ll have to see what kind of changes he makes.
