With the American political class focused on the House of Representatives’ latest attempt to elect a new Speaker, the Senate Judiciary Committee convened on Tuesday to hold a hearing about Name, Image and Likeness legislation affecting college athletes.

The hearing got derailed at several points, with a prominent example coming when Josh Hawley, a Republican Senator from Missouri, questioned witnesses about things like the Middle East conflict and transgender athletes.

The world was quick to react to Hawley’s antics in the hearing related to college athletics, with many disgusted by his line of questioning:

“Ah yes, both issues that have plagued us for years,” Derek Cody wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

“The right doesn’t really have any real policies/plans anymore so they just act as obstructionists that try to derail everything in our country into some weird culture war battle,” wrote Tyler Tomei.

“I see that while the House is in chaos because they can’t get their head out of their rears, that the Senate side is doing the important work,” wrote Cyclone Hulk.

“The grandstanding in these hearings (and this is how nearly all of these hearings work, not just the NIL/college athletics ones) is unbearable,” wrote Brian Murphy.
