The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Denver Broncos on Thursday night to move to 5-1 on the season, but the win certainly didn’t come because of stellar play on the offensive side of the ball, and star quarterback Patrick Mahomes recognizes that.
The Chiefs won by a score of 19-8, managing just one touchdown in the game while Patrick Mahomes also threw a crucial red zone interception. And after the game, Mahomes got brutally honest about the team’s offensive struggles, making it clear that they are lucky the defense is playing well despite the struggles on the offensive side of the ball.
“Luckily for us, our defense is playing great so we can go through these growing pains and try to get better and better,” Mahomes said according to Pro Football Talk. “The talent is there. You can see it in spurts, but we have to learn how to sustain drives. Getting down to the red zone, score touchdowns and make it easier on our defense to play a little bit more free.”
It’s reasonable to expect that the Chiefs offense will come alive at some point. After all, they’re led by perhaps the best quarterback in the league with an offensive-minded head coach. But until they do, it’s good for them that they get to lean on the defense a bit.
