The rules of Bill Belichick’s press conferences are pretty set in stone by now. Ask a question about this week’s opponents and you’ll get nothing but flattering platitudes. Ask about weekly game plans and you’ll get practically nothing useful. Ask about the minutiae of special teams formations or the history of the game and you’ll get an enthusiastic and informative lecture. Ask about bland, cliched sports narratives and you’ll get a deliciously contemptuous response like this one that Belichick delivered today when he was asked to give himself a midseason grade:

Who cares? What difference does it make? Give me an F. Give me a C+. I mean, it doesn’t really matter. Right now, we’re focused on the Giants. I mean, that’s all I really care about. We’re trying to beat the Giants. I don’t really care about, you know, some midseason – midterm – grades. Give me whatever you want. I don’t care.
Belichick may not care about midseason grades but he should know that he gets an A+ for that answer.
