The Megavalanche is an intense mountainbike marathon that runs through the French Alps. The 32 kilometer race starts at the summit of Pic Blanc and it travels down 2,000m (about 6,561 feet) but this GoPro video from this year’s Megavalanche truly captures just how chaotic the event can be from the very start of the race.
Within the first five seconds of the video, all hell breaks loose as one rider hits the deck immediately in the rush out of the gate. What follows is equal parts breathtaking and nerve-wrecking as various riders take huge spills on their way down the slope.
French rider Cecile Ravanel ended up winning this year’s Megavalanche with a winning time of 48 minutes and 16.96 seconds.
