Following the heartbreaking news that Tony Gwynn had passed away on Monday morning after battling cancer, the only MLB team that he ever called his own – the San Diego Padres – honored him alongside the Seattle Mariners with a nice tribute at Safeco Field on Monday night.
Gwynn spent the entirety of his 20-year Hall of Fame with the Padres and remained a beloved fixture in the community well beyond his last game with the game. Aptly nicknamed “Mr. Padre,” reminders of Gwynn’s impact and legacy on not only his team but baseball as a whole were omnipresent around the league last night.
I’m sure the Padres will have another special tribute planned for Gwynn when they return home to PETCO Park tomorrow night.
