The Scots may have won their freedom from England in 1314 but for the past twenty years they have faced a far more treacherous kind of oppression: the US ban on haggis. That’s right, if you’re a pure hearted Scotsman living in America who just wants to enjoy an evening with friends while snacking on sheep’s ‘pluck’ (heart, liver and lungs), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and simmered in the sheep’s stomach for three hours, you’re out of luck.
And who doesn’t want some of this:
Richard Lochhead, the Scottish Rural Affairs Secretary, is following in the footsteps of William Wallace and looking to lead a revolution. Lochhead is inviting US politicians to Scotland in hopes of opening the lucrative US haggis market for imports:
We want to capitalise on the diaspora of Scots in the US and many of them would enjoy the opportunity to indulge in authentic Scottish haggis to accompany their neeps and tatties on Burns Night.
I have no idea what neeps and tatties are or which night it is the Scots will be burning things but Braveheart won five Oscars so it seems only right that if Americans can enjoy that bit of Scottish culture they should be able to enjoy authentic haggis as well. Oh, and it would open the door to a phenomenal Big Skeezy Challenge.
