With the PGA Tour and LIV Golf merger still on the ropes, there is still some uncertainty about the future of golf. And amidst all this, there are now talks that another one of the top PGA Tour golfers could be the next to jump ship to LIV Golf.
Rory McIlroy has been adamantly against LIV ever since its inception, serving as one of the most loyal members of the PGA Tour. But his tune may be changing very quickly on LIV Golf after reports emerged on Monday of a perhaps record deal on the table for him to join the Saudi-backed golf league.
According to City A.M., multiple sources with knowledge of the situation believe that McIlroy is “close to” a deal to join LIV. They also claimed that LIV has offered McIlroy $850 million along with a small percent equity in the league.
It would be quite the shift in opinion from McIlroy if he does indeed join LIV. Not only has he praised the PGA Tour amidst some of the top stars leaving for LIV, but he has also publicly blasted plenty of the top players who did depart for LIV in the past.
But as we have seen from the likes of Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau in the past, money certainly talks when it comes to LIV negotiations. If that startling amount of money is on the table for McIlroy, it certainly could be enough for him to potentially jump ship.
Only time will tell if anything comes of this rumor. But it is at the very least an intriguing scenario to potentially see a player like Rory McIlroy playing for LIV Golf.
