The Jacksonville Jaguars signed veteran wide receiver Gabe Davis this month, adding an important piece to their offense, especially after losing star receiver Calvin Ridley in free agency. And it sounds like the team is expecting big things from Davis, and not just as a pass-catching wide receiver.

During a recent interview, Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson made it clear that the team will want to use Gabe Davis as a blocker in the running game in addition to his duties as pass-catching receiver, calling Davis a “Swiss Army knife.”

“We can put him in positions to block, we can put him in positions to run, he’s a good route runner, he’s strong, he’s big . . . Gabe is, to me, like a Swiss Army knife,” Pederson said according to Demetrius Harvey of the Florida Times-Union. “He can obviously run routes, the guy is right around 81-82 targets a year for the last four years if you average them out. He’s a big part of the offense in Buffalo.”

Obviously, Davis will be catching passes for the Jaguars this upcoming season – he is still a wide receiver, after all – but based on these comments from Pederson, it sounds like he’ll be doing a lot more for the team than just catching balls.
