There are few things more American than drinking a couple of beers and watching football on the weekend in the fall, but one government official could try to limit alcohol consumption in the United States.
According to The Daily Mail, Director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) George Koob is considering telling Americans to have no more than two drinks per week, following Canada’s lead. This would be a drastic change as the current guidelines, which recommend no more than two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women.
The United States’ current guidelines are up for review in 2025, and Koob claims that the guidelines are liking to become more strict, if anything. And he specifically mentioned the guidelines in Canada.
“I mean, they’re not going to go up, I’m pretty sure,” Koob told The Daily Mail. “So, if [alcohol consumption guidelines] go in any direction, it would be toward Canada.”
Of course, these would only be recommendations and not strict limits or law. So even if the guidelines do change, it would be nearly impossible to keep Americans from drinking more than the recommended amount. But that’s unlikely to stop the government from trying.
