On Tuesday morning, the golf world was hit with some rather shocking news that LIV Golf and the PGA Tour were announcing a merger between the two leagues. But former United States President Donald Trump has long expected this to happen.

Back in July of last year, Donald Trump made a post to his Truth Social – a social network he helped create after he was banned from Twitter and Facebook – predicting an eventual merger between the two leagues and warning PGA Tour golfers to “take the money now,” claiming that they will “get nothing after the merger takes place.”

“All of those golfers that remain ‘loyal’ to the very disloyal PGA, in all of its different forms, will pay a big price when the inevitable MERGER with LIV comes, and you get nothing but a big ‘thank you’ from PGA officials who are making Millions of Dollars a year. If you don’t take the money now, you will get nothing after the merger takes place, and only say how smart the original signees were.” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

It’s worth noting that Trump is not merely a casual bystander in the process. Trump has business dealings with Saudi-backed LIV Golf as the tour uses his golf courses for events throughout the season. It’s not clear what exactly that relationship entails, but Trump’s business dealings with LIV Golf are currently under investigation by the Department of Justice in connection to his alleged mishandling of classified documents.

It’s not clear what Trump’s relationship will be with the group following the merger, but it’s clear that the former president supports the decision.
