Charles Eugster has to be one of the most interesting men in the world.
The 95-year-old former dentist, runner, rower and bodybuilder can now add “world-record holder” to his resume.
On Sunday, Eugster broke the world record for the indoor 200m in his age group at the British Masters Athletics in London. Eugster ran the 200 in 55.48 seconds which bested the old record, set by Orville Rogers in 2013, by 2.4 seconds.
Remarkably, Eugster is not even a life-long fitness freak. According to the Washington Post, he didn’t really dedicate himself to fitness until the age of 87.
“I hoped getting fit would stop me aging,” Eugster told the Telegraph in 2013. “It was pure vanity, really. I looked a mess and I was having a late-life crisis. My body was degenerating. I thought: ‘Who knows about muscles?’ So, when I was 87, I joined a bodybuilding club.”
If nothing else, Charles Eugster continues to prove that it’s never too late to start a new hobby or get in shape. Hell, this might motivate me to dust off my running shoes. Well, maybe tomorrow.
