Spring is just around the corner, which means college football teams are starting to get a first look at their squads for next season. One interesting development out of Baylor’s camp is the fact that LaQuan McGowan has been taking snaps at tight end and halfback.
Why is that interesting?
Well, he’s 6’7, listed at 410 pounds, and typically lines up at guard…but there’s serious reason to believe that he could be doing a lot more than just blocking for the Bears’ offense next season.
From the Waco Tribune:
The big man is wearing No. 80 and has been practicing there during spring drills.
“We’re looking at him as kind of a slot and tight end type of guy,” Baylor coach Art Briles said. “He can certainly help us in the run game in those situations. The way we’re looking at it is we’ve got three games in nonconference to kind of feel it out and see what he can do and teach him what to do in live action.”
Baylor quarterback Seth Russell likes throwing to McGowan because he has big, soft hands.
“His hands are about as big as my leg, so I can pretty much put it wherever, and he can snag it out of the air,” Russell said.
We’ve already been given a glimpse of what we might be able to expect from McGowan, as he caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Bryce Petty in the Cotton Bowl last year.
Trying to tackle a 400+ lb. tight end doesn’t really seem like it would be a whole lot of fun, so thoughts and prayers to every defense Baylor faces next season. As for myself, I’m very much excited for the prospect of many Fat Guy Touchdowns.
