The St. Louis Rams are issuing their final roster cuts to get the team down to 53 men this weekend and defensive end Michael Sam is one of the casualties. The Rams officially released Sam on Saturday afternoon, making him one of the team’s final five cuts.

Sam, who is aiming to become the first openly gay player in the NFL, had a strong rookie preseason but was battling for a roster spot on a talented defensive line. He should find a spot on another team’s roster or practice squad very soon.
