Edward “Chip” Sarafin — an offensive lineman for Arizona State — has come out as gay, making him the first openly gay Division-1 college football player. In a story written by Joshua Wyrick in Compete Magazine, Sarafin says he came out to his teammates last spring.

Here is Sarafin, in the article, talking about coming out to his team:

It was really personal for me and it benefited my peace of mind greatly.”

Michael Sam, formerly a player for Missouri, came out to his teammates before the 2013 regular season, but didn’t publicly come out until after the season. Sam is currently playing for the St. Louis Rams in the NFL.
