Eric Staal’s NHL season was cut short as the Carolina Hurricanes didn’t make it to the playoffs. Staal went on to play in the IIHF World Championship, serving as the captain for Team Canada. In a game against Sweden on Thursday, Staal collided knee-on-knee with Vancouver Canucks defenseman and Swede, Alex Edler. From the video footage (which can be viewed here), you can see that Staal is in an immense amount of pain as he flails around in agony on the ice. Edler received a five minute major for kneeing and a game misconduct.
