Overview:

Jake Peavy has had no postseason success against the St. Louis Cardinals, going 0-2 with a bulky 9.88 ERA in three starts, his last coming in Game 3 of the 2013 World Series with the Boston Red Sox, but if this season’s second half is any indication, the veteran pitcher could prove destructive for the cold bats of the Cards.

He enters Sunday’s massive Game 2 with a 1.23 ERA in his last ten starts and will attempt to piggyback off Madison Bumgarner’s impressive Game 1 start in which he and two relievers combined for a clean 4-hit shutout. His opponent, Lance Lynn has not seen his ERA float above 3.00 since mid-July and held the Dodgers to two runs over six innings in NLDS Game 2, his sixth career postseason start. While the weight of this game lies on Lynn to keep the feisty Giants contained, the real story is the Cardinals offense, one that hasn’t scored more than three runs since Game 1 of the NLDS.

Mike Matheny’s bunch will look to significantly increase the 1.25 runs per game average over their last four postseason games, while Bruce Bochy and San Francisco seek to take a massive step in returning to the World Series for the third time in four seasons.
