Due to its format and its exclusivity, LIV Golf has never been able to earn recognition from the Official World Golf Ranking. The Saudi-back league has now withdrawn its application and is no longer seeking that recognition, but it seems that many of the players who joined LIV were told the league would get recognition from the OWGR.
During a recent appearance on the Subpar podcast, 32-year-old LIV player Carlos Ortiz revealed that players were told that they would have the opportunity to earn OWGR points while on the LIV Golf tour, which obviously is not the case.
“They definitely said that we were going to get [OWGR points],” Ortiz said on the podcast according to ESPN. “I just feel that, people have to recognize that there are good players here, and if you want to have a ranking that includes all the golf players, you have to have some [LIV] people included in that ranking.”
LIV Golf has not been able to receive recognition from the OWGR due to the 54-hole format of its tournaments as well as the team-style format of the league. Without OWGR recognition, LIV Golf players cannot earn OWGR points to qualify for major tournaments.
