Sometimes, an NFL player will give a sort of hometown discount in order to stay with their current team during free agency. But it doesn’t sound like star cornerback Jaylon Johnson will be doing that with the Chicago Bears as he becomes a free agent this offseason.
Jaylon Johnson earned a spot in the Pro Bowl this season. During a recent interview, he said that he has “no doubt” about his status as one of the top cornerbacks in the entire league. And he had a particularly brutal message for the Bears, making it clear that he expects to be paid like one next season whether it’s with the Chicago Bears or another team.
“Heart’s definitely in Chicago, mind’s definitely on the money,” Johnson said according to the NFL official website. “So, I mean, we’ll figure out if we can make them both come together and get something done. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s to come.”
Following the season, Chicago Bears General Manager Ryan Poles sent a pretty bold message, declaring that Johnson “not going to go anywhere and we’ll work through it to get something done.”
We’ll see if that turns out to be the case, or if Johnson decides to seek a bigger contract from a different team.
