The bond between a head coach and a star player is like nothing else in college sports, especially college football. You see it a few times every decade. Urban Meyer and Tim Tebow. Dabo Swinney and Deshaun Watson.

What about Jadeveon Clowney and Steve Spurrier?

The two teamed up for some of the most successful seasons in University of South Carolina Gamecocks history. Clowney was one of the most dominant defensive forces to come through the sport ever. Whoever went up against him, they were chopped liver.

Clowney was asked in an interview with a couple of kid reporters if he could do a southern accent. Clowney said he couldn’t do a great one but he could do one of his former head coach Steve Spurrier.

The impression isn’t that bad (he starts to do it around the 1:30 mark)! It does sound like he is a kid after a birthday party sucking up balloons but that is the general sound of Spurrier anyway. And the kids aren’t doing a half bad job of grilling him.

If history is any indication, kid reporters get the best answers out of players and coaches. They got this great impression out of Clowney. We need more team’s and publications to embrace it! Maybe my job should be occupied by a few kids, who am I to say?
