Bruce Irvin, the outspoken defensive end who currently plies his trade for the Seattle Seahawks, was spotted courtside during the Atlanta Hawks’ last-second 83-82 win over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night. Irvin is an Atlanta native, so he wasn’t entirely out of place in Philips Arena. He did, however, speak his mind on his current employment situation — a situation that involves the Seahawks not picking up the fifth year option on his rookie contract. Speaking to Black Sports Online’s Samuel Logan, Irvin made the following declaration:
“I’m going to be in Atlanta next season. I’m ready,” said Irvin in response to my question about where he wants to be after his contract his up. “Atlanta is where I want to be. Believe that,” said Irvin.
Aside from being an Atlanta native, going to the Falcons makes sense, considering his former defensive coordinator, Dan Quinn, is the Falcons’ new head coach. A move to Atlanta wouldn’t be too dissimilar to former Seahawks Red Bryant and Chris Clemons following Gus Bradley to Jacksonville (Bradley was the Seahawks DC before Quinn). Except, in the case of Clemons and Bryant, both had been cut by the Seahawks before signing with the Jaguars.
Irvin still has one more year in Seattle, and considering he’s playing for a contract, the Seahawks can expect an all-out performance from him this season, regardless of where he ends up next year. Still, he should probably keep his mouth shut on future plans, and stick to messing around with Jimmy Graham.
