While HGH testing is quite common in MLB — baseball tests for human growth hormone in the middle of the season — that isn’t exactly the case with the NFL. Despite reaching an agreement with the NFLPA in 2011 to test for HGH, the NFL is still having difficulty directly testing for HGH because the NFLPA doesn’t want commissioner Roger Goodell to be the only one who gets to decide on player discipline.
Well, according to an ESPN survey, 63 percent of players surveyed would be okay with HGH testing…in exchange for guaranteed contracts.
The survey, which reached 100 NFL players, asked “What concessions would you make for guaranteed contracts?” 17 percent said an “18-game schedule,” and 14 percent said “five years to become a free agent instead of four.”
It’s interesting to note that only 17 percent selected “an 18-game schedule” as their choice. It’s interesting because Sean Gilbert, who is running for executive director of the NFLPA, is proposing an 18-game schedule that eliminates two preseason games. If Gilbert is able to beat DeMaurice Smith — the current executive director — he might experience some pushback in response to his 18-game schedule proposal.
