For anyone who’s been a loyal listener of Adam Carolla over the years, you’ve assuredly heard one of his roughly 798 rants about the height of NFL goalposts, and the confusion that occurs when a kicker sails one directly over the post, leaving the referees to do a collective shrug and say “well, I guess that was good?” Not only has he ranted on his podcast about it, he’s also shared his thoughts on the NFL Network (he’s a regular on Rich Eisen’s show), and his proposed rule change has been mentioned on NFL.com.
Finally, after years of bellyaching, NFL owners agreed with the Aceman, and goalposts will now be extended by five feet. The rule change is just one of a handful the league announced today, following yesterday’s announcements on the goalpost dunking ban, and allowing officials to consult with the officiating department in New York on replays. Two other rules of note are as follows:
- The “NaVorro Bowman Rule” was passed. That allows the officials to make the recovery of a loose ball in the field of play a reviewable call. This loophole was exposed when Bowman clearly recovered a ball in the NFC Championship Game last year, but the play couldn’t be under review.
- The game clock will now continue after a quarterback sack outside of two minutes.
