Golfer Phil Mickelson is set to become part-owner of the San Diego Padres, the San Diego Union Tribune reports.
“We’ll hopefully have something here shortly to announce.”

“There are a lot of little variables,” Mickelson said on Monday night. “It’s the timing of everything as it relates to my career, how that will work over time – how we’ll work through that and so forth. All of that stuff plays into the whole relationship. We just want to have a clear understanding.
“I’m really excited about working with (new owner) Peter Seidler and the O’Malley family. We understand each other’s concerns and work well together.”
Mickelson, a San Diego native, has been linked with the team for some time now, but when the purchasing papers were finalized in August, Phil’s name was not on the list of owners. That seems to be a non-issue, however, as Padres owner Peter Seidler said, “we have a spot in our group for Phil and only Phil. We expect that to be finalized in two weeks.”
That quote was about six weeks ago, but due to Phil’s recent play in the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs and the Ryder Cup, he has had quite a lot on his plate.
