During Tuesday night’s victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, Cubs rookie Kyle Schwarber hit a home run so far that it literally landed on top of Wrigley Field’s scoreboard.
Seeing as the moment is sure to be one of the most iconic in recent Cubs history, the team plans to leave the ball on top of the scoreboard for the rest of the Cubs’ playoff run.
A Cubs’ employee was sent to retrieve the ball on Wednesday morning and a source said the team verified it was the actual Schwarber ball through an MLB postseason watermark on it.
The Cubs then returned it to its original location on top of the board and will leave it there until their postseason run has concluded.
The team hasn’t decided what to do with Schwarber’s dinger yet. For now, the ball will be safely secured in a plexiglass case to protect it from the weather and anyone who goes up to the scoreboard will have to be escorted by security.
It’s difficult to say how significant the ball will be when the Cubs’ playoff story is still being written but one can’t blame the team for being proactive in this case. That home run was a monster.
