Ohio native LeBron James may be hated in Cleveland, but he still has some fans in his hometown of Akron. Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic has recently decided to honor the three-time MVP, NBA Champion and Olympic gold medalist by putting up blue and white signs that will be in the nine biggest entrances to Akron.
Details from the Akron Beacon Journal (via the Basketball Jones) state:
Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic also unveiled the newest honor to Akron’s most famous resident — blue and white signs that will be posted at nine major entrances to Akron that proclaim the city his home.
“For my money, he’s the greatest Akronite because he cares about Akron,” Plusquellic said.
The honor comes as no surprise to those who know LeBron’s charitable acts throughout his hometown. Every year LeBron holds his annual ‘Wheels for Education’ bikeathon which is aimed at keeping third-graders in school.
A Harvard study indicated that third grade is the time when students begin to lose interest in school and in Akron Public Schools, that lack of interest translates into a 24 percent dropout rate.
This does not mean, however, that everybody in Akron still loves LeBron. There were a reported few that still yelled out things like “traitor” and threw some “boos” his way–something LeBron has undoubtedly grown used to after his move to the Miami Heat.
