Maybe this third reboot will be the charm. After a lengthy “worldwide casting search,” Marvel Studios, in conjunction Sony Pictures, have announced that they have found their new Peter Parker as well as a new director for the upcoming currently-untitled film.
According to a press release that Marvel released on Tuesday, 19 year-old Tom Holland will play Spider-Man and Jon Watts will direct the reboot of the reboot of the Webslinger’s franchise.
Watt is best known for his horror film Clown as well as the movie Cop Car.
As for Holland, Marvel highlighted his work in The Impossible, Wolf Hall, and In the Heart of the Sea as the reasons why he’s been chosen for the monumental role of Spider-Man.
Both seem to be fairly young and without a ton of experience under their belts but Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman was quick to brush those concerns aside:
The Marvel process is very thorough, and that’s why their results are so outstanding. I’m confident Spider-Man will be no exception. I’ve worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent. For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom’s screen tests were special. All in all, we are off to a roaring start.
The next Spider-Man film is slated to be released in theaters on July 28th, 2017. However, audiences should get a preview of Holland as Spider-Man/Peter Parker in Marvel’s upcoming Captain America: Civil War. Let the endless speculation and hype begin.
