In game five of the 1956 World Series between the New York Yankees and the then Brooklyn Dodgers, Yankees pitcher Don Larsen pitched a perfect game — the only pefect game to be pitched in a World Series to this day. Recently, the jersey he wore during that game was auctioned off for a price tag of $756,000.
Apparently, that wasn’t enough, however. Back in June, Larsen was asked how much he wanted the uniform to sell for. His response?
“A million,” he said. “Why go cheap?”
Expecting a million dollars for his jersey wasn’t as unrealistic as it may seem. In May, a Babe Ruth jersey sold for over $4 million, making it the most expensive piece of memorabilia in history.
While some might think Larsen selling his most prized possession is crazy, he did it for a very admirable reason. He will pay for his granddaughters college educations with the money.
The auction, put on by Steiner Sports Memorabilia, also featured Bob Knight’s ring from his perfect 1976 season where he won the NCAA title, but the highest big went to Larsen’s jersey.
