Lincoln Riley upset a lot of people in Norman, Oklahoma back in 2022 when he abruptly left as the head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners to become the next head coach of the USC Trojans. And it seems like the leaders at Oklahoma are still a little bit upset about it.
During an appearance on “SEC Now” on Monday, Oklahoma Sooners athletic director Joe Castiglione was answering questions about the team’s move to the SEC. And as part of those comments, he did not hold back in his criticism of former head coach Lincoln Riley as he implies that.
“I’m telling you, without reservation, every coach that we talked to was excited. And you know what? The ones that weren’t, aren’t here anymore,” Castiglione said, clearly referencing Riley who left the program after the team accepted an invitation to join the SEC.
“We call that a mic drop,” Oklahoma president Joe Harroz said in response to Castiglione’s comments.
There has been a lot of speculation that Riley’s reluctance to want to play in the SEC played a role in Riley’s decision to leave the program. These comments from Castiglione and Harroz seem to add a little bit of credence to that belief.
