The Appalachian State Mountaineers football team is mourning the tragic loss of one of their players this week as offensive lineman John “Jack” Murphy passed away on Friday.
A university spokesperson confirmed the news, but offered no details regarding the cause of death or any other circumstances, only revealing that no foul play was suspected.
“The hearts of the App State community are with Jack’s loved ones during this very difficult time,” Megan Hayes, senior associate vice chancellor and chief communications officer, said in a statement given to ESPN. “We are respecting his family’s wishes and requests and are providing support and assistance as requested.”
Appalachian State head coach Shawn Clark offered his condolences to his fallen player on social media.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Jack Murphy. He was a beloved Mountaineer. Please keep his loved ones and our App State family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” Clark said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.
