A trick play led to a state championship title for Southaven as they took on Gulfport Harrison Central High during the first game of the best-of-three Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 6A state title series. With two outs in the 7th inning, Harrison Central had a runner on second base which represented a possible go ahead run, however thanks to the “the ol’ Wichita pickoff” it wasn’t meant to be. Check out Southaven’s pitcher Wyatt Short fake a pickoff play to second base and the second baseman pretending as if the ball had made its way to the outfield. Unsuspecting of any tomfoolery, the Harrison Central runner took off to third and was immediately tagged out by Short who was still holding the ball. Southaven would go on to win the game in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a walkoff grounder and take game one of the best of three series.
