The Secret Se4rvice has long struggled to protect presidents on golf courses—particularly those belonging to Donald Trump—according to an explosive new report from Kevin Liptak of CNN.
“A golf course presents a particular challenge,” Liptak writes.
“The fairways and greens of a golf course are often the largest outdoor area a president can visit, and their design — often abutting public roads and containing elements such as trees and hills that can conceal would-be assassins — make them particularly difficult for the agency to secure.”
Trump, an avowed golfer before, during and after his presidency, was the victim of another assassination attempt on Sunday.
While playing at his course in Miami, Secret Service agents discovered Ryan Wesley Routh, a longtime Republican voter, waiting in the bushes with an AK-47.
The would-be assassin was taken alive by agents.
“The level where he is at right now, he is not the sitting president. If he was, we would have had the entire golf course surrounded. But because he’s not, security is limited to the areas the Secret Service deems possible,” Sheriff Ric Bradshaw told CNN.
“I would imagine the next time (Trump) comes to the golf course, there would probably be a little more people around the perimeter,” Bradshaw added.
