Last week, news broke that former head coach Jim Harbaugh was set to be an honorary captain for the Michigan Wolverines for their season-opening showdown with Fresno State, but it doesn’t sound like that’s going to happen, after all.
According to Michigan Wolverines beat writer Austin Meek of The Athletic, Jim Harbaugh has informed current Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore that he had changed his mind and will no longer serve as the honorary captain for the team during their season-opener.
“Jim Harbaugh will not be an honorary captain at Michigan’s opener, Moore says. Harbaugh called and said he didn’t want to be away from the Chargers,” Meek said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

The decision to honor Harbaugh in this way in the first place was quite controversial considering the NCAA recently gave Harbaugh a strong penalty as a result of recruiting violations, placing a four-year show-cause penalty on the former head coach. Additionally, Michigan is still under investigation from the NCAA as a result of the alleged illegal sign-stealing scheme that took place while Harbaugh was the program’s head coach.
But it sounds like Michigan will now avoid that controversy.
