Back in 2022, Brittney Griner was arrested in Russia after authorities found a small amount of prescription cannabis oil in her luggage at the airport. She was arrested and sentenced to nine years in prison before she was ultimately released by way of a prisoner swap. And now, she’s opening up about the terrifying ordeal.
Brittney Griner recently sat down for an interview with Robin Roberts of ABC News, and she opened up about what was going through her mind as she was being searched and knew that she was likely going to be arrested.
“Just everything that I’m not gonna see. I’m thinking about my wife,” Griner said according to Fox News. “Thinking about what my family is gonna think, public opinion is gonna think. I can just see the headlines now, like I could just visualize everything I worked so hard for just crumbling and going away.
“And to be somewhere where there’s no understanding. In the U.S., I can articulate what happened, how this happened. I didn’t plan to do this. This was a mistake. It was an accident. I understand accidents have repercussions, but there’s nothing. There’s none of that.”
The full interview is set to air on Wednesday.
