For decades, college football and the NFL have been distinctly different games with different sets of rules to differentiate the two sports. But with some rule changes that seem to be coming to college football ahead of next season, it sounds like the college game will look a lot more like the NFL game – and not everyone is happy about it.
According to a report from college football insider Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports, the NCAA is moving toward making three significant changes that are already in place in the NFL.
“In a long-expected move, administrators on Friday are expected to finalize a recommendation for the adoption of a player-to-coach helmet communications system, the use of tablets on the sideline as well as in the halftime locker room and a two-minute warning in the college game,” Dellenger wrote for Yahoo Sports.
Those are some significant changes, but college football fans are not at all happy about one of them in particular – the two-minute warning. Fans seem to think that it’s an unnecessary step that will only lead to more commercials and make the game unnecessarily similar to the NFL.
The two-minute warning piece sucks so bad. They’re trying to treat this sport like an NFL developmental league and make it identical.
So many of these rule changes around the clock are going to work to eliminate the diversity of play style that makes college football great https://t.co/SZ9fs6coTl

You say two-minute warning. I say additional commercial break. https://t.co/5oeOIODVJr

They just changed the clock rules because games were taking too long, and are now adding a 2-minute warning, now why would they do that? 🤔🤑 https://t.co/eAks50NrgM

A two-minute rule is awful. Administrators are slowly taking away what makes college football great and different from the NFL https://t.co/74wfr3oBEB

NCAA: football games are too long so we’re gonna implement a running clock
also NCAA: let’s add a two minute warning! https://t.co/oZQaCl1nAz

Had to change the first down time rule to "shorten" the game and now they want to add in a mandatory tv timeout every half. These people are shameless. https://t.co/355zGHBflc

It’s worth noting that these changes have not been officially adopted yet, but it seems very clear that they are coming.
