United States Women’s National Team legend Megan Rapinoe is one of the most accomplished American soccer stars in history. But for everything she accomplished on the field, it sounds like she might be more proud of what she did off of it.
While helping lead the USWNT to two World Cup titles during her playing career, she also stood up for many social causes, standing up for the LGBTQ and famously kneeling for the national anthem back in 2016 in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick as he protested racial inequality in the United States.
Following the final match of her career on Sunday night, Megan Rapinoe did an interview with former USWNT players Shannon Boxx and Julie Foudy for TNT, and she made it clear that her goal was always to use her platform to “make the world a better place.”
“Obviously I love the game and I love playing, but I think everybody knows I’ve always used that to try to make the world a better place,” Rapinoe said according to The Daily Mail. “I think that’s been most meaningful for me, I think that’s what you guys [Boxx and Foudy] did for us, you gave us a dream.”
Rapinoe made it clear that she’s proud of the fact that she feels like she’s made a positive impact on the world.
“I feel like I’ve been a huge part of that and this generation of players have been a big part of that. So when I look up, I see people who have been inspired and maybe seen themselves in our team in some way or another.
“And it just makes me really proud to know that we’ve been as successful in the field as we have but that we’ve also made the world a little bit better of a place.”
