The Astros have canned manager Bo Porter before he was allowed to complete the season. The second-year manager has posted a combined record of 110-190, with a 59-79 mark in 2014.
Porter’s lack of on-field resources certainly led to the horrendous win-loss mark after the front office has blown up the roster multiple times over the last few seasons. However, the firing is not a result of that .367 winning percentage. Houston general manager Jeff Luhnow released the following statement following whispers that he and Porter were not playing nice:
Bo’s passion and energy are unparalleled, and his desire to win unquestioned. This decision was not made because of our current level of competitiveness in the Major Leagues. I recognize that our win-loss record is largely a product of an organizational strategy for which I am responsible. Rather, I made this decision because I believe we need a new direction in our clubhouse.
The decision comes just days after Ken Rosenthal reported that the manager and GM were not getting along and serious tension had developed during the season.
A former player, Porter arrived in 2013 after stints as a third base coach with the Marlins (2007-09), Diamondbacks (2010) and Nationals (2011-12). Houston bench coach Dave Trembley was also fired and Tom Lawless was named interim manager while former Astros infielder Adam Everett will be interim bench coach.
