In news that is both simultaneously surprising and unsurprising, the Nintendo Switch console has already outsold its 2012 predecessor, despite being out for less than a year.
Polygon reports the Switch has sold 14.86 million consoles, compared to 13.56 Wii U’s since 2012.
As someone who traded in their Wii U immediately to get the Switch, it’s not shocking for a few reasons.
Firstly, the launch titles were terrific. Zelda Breath of the Wild and later, Super Mario Oddysey in the first year of release? Hell yeah. The Wii U launched with a bunch of B-titles and never had a genuinely great game.
Furthermore, the Switch’s mobility is a huge selling point. It’s genuinely a console you can play wherever you want. While the Wii U was stationary and had a bulky, weird controller that never honestly felt right.
However, I’m pretty shocked the Switch caught up this quickly to the Wii U in sales. 14.86 million units in less than a year are fantastic for a company that released what’s widely considering a missed opportunity in the Wii U.
The Switch is fun, has great games and can be played anywhere. Nintendo hit a home run and will continue to carry momentum if they keep making the right moves. The switch (:D) worked out!
