A high school football team in Washington recently learned (the hard way) that celebrating should only be done AFTER you secure the victory.
Trailing 24-23 against Skyview High School, Columbia River High lined up for a field goal with seven seconds left to play in the game. Skyview managed to block the attempted game-winning field goal by Columbia’s kicker, but what they did not manage to do was cover the loose (and LIVE) ball.
While Skyview’s players celebrated and rushed the field, Columbia’s coaches alerted their players that the ball was live and they scooped it up for an uncontested touchdown. Just like that, Skyview had lost the game.
Ouch. Play ’til the whistle next time, boys….it’ll save you some serious heartbreak.
